Narrabri Shire Council is seeking a Manager Governance and Risk to lead, develop and shape the governance and risk management functions at Council. This newly created role is pivotal in ensuring that Council is operating within legislative compliance, accountability and safety guidelines.

Reporting to the Director Planning, Strategy and People, the Manager Governance and Risk will lead continual improvement and best practice for corporate planning, risk management, internal audit and compliance programs. As the Manager Governance and Risk, you will establish positive working relationships and mentor a team in work health and safety, quality management and environmental management.

Key Responsibilities

  • Manage the governance function of Council including the provision of Council meetings, Council elections and the maintenance of statutory registers, instruments of delegations and authorisations.
  • Provide expert advice to Council and the Council Executive on governance and legislative matters
  • Ensure Council policies and procedures are compliant with all statutory obligations.
  • Develop and implement Council's Risk Management Framework and Council's Health Safety Environment and Quality (HSEQ) Systems.

Skills and Attributes

  • Thorough understanding of legislative requirements, local government processes and inter-governmental relationships.
  • Demonstrated experience with a record of achievement in governance and risk management.
  • Experience in working with elected members, executives, and other stakeholders to resolve high priority, and often sensitive and complex matters.
  • Experience building a cohesive, responsive team that delivers excellent community-focused services in a challenging and high-pressure environment.
